I really enjoyed Robbie Robertson's self-titled first solo album. I listened to it too much, I grew a little tired of it. It was a mainstay on Canadian radio for years (Canadian content). I still hear it on the radio when I am in Vancouver.
The next album wasn't that interesting and I stopped paying attention. As I started wrapping up this year, I noticed the new album showing up on the end of year lists, so I gave it a listen.
The album has a very familiar feel to it. The melodies are reminiscent of old songs from The Band, but if pressed, I couldn't identify the specific songs. It is a comfortable album and the songs have familiar themes to his other work.
The one difference, and I can't explain why this is, I really liked this album. There is something about it that drew me in and caused me to be interested and connected with it. I did not react this way to Paul Simon's album and I don't know why. I also have too much to do to figure it out.
